We’ve conducted a thorough technical, and here’s our recommendation:
If you're a reel modder, round reel enthusiast, or anglers that love trying something quite different, CNC machining fan etc, the ANLAN reel is an exciting choice that you’ll appreciate.

The spool tension knob actually functions as a type of brake. ANLAN made a bold move by removing the spool tension knob from its reel, arguing it wasn’t necessary since the reel already had a fine-tuning brake in place. Initially, many users criticized this decision—but only a few months later, DAIWA released a reel without a spool tension knob as well. DAIWA later released reels where the tension knob was factory-set (“zero adjuster”) and essentially non-adjustable, relying instead on the magnetic or centrifugal braking system—echoing what ANLAN had done

ANLAN RoundReel Review | A CNC Masterpiece with Thoughtful Innovations

The ANLAN Roundreel is a lightweight, compact reel packed with innovation and solid craftsmanship. In this review, let’s break down its key highlights and assess its performance from an angler’s perspective.

Highlight 1: Unique Line Guide Mechanism

One of the standout features is the line guide behavior:

• When you press the thumb bar, the line guide flips forward, increasing the distance between the guide and the spool.
• This clever mechanism helps reduce friction during casting, enhancing casting distance.
• Aesthetically, the line guide design is ultra-clean — no visible half-moon pin holes from the outside, giving it a sleek look.

Highlight 2: Functional Arm Design

• The raised bump below the handle arm isn't a micro-adjustment knob.
• Instead, it houses internal gears and bearings, supporting a zero-adjustment concept — simplifying operation for anglers.

Highlight 3: Silky Side Plate Experience

• The feel of opening and closing the side plate is simply delightful.
• Once in hand, you'll be amazed by the tactile feedback:
  • Smooth rotation
  • Just-right resistance
  • A satisfying "click" at the end of closure — highly addictive!

Highlight 4: Shimano-style FTB Brake System

• ANLAN uses a brake system similar to Shimano's FTB.
• Two magnetic bars automatically adjust braking force based on spool speed, making casts more stable and consistent.

Highlight 5: High Level of Component Integration

Most parts of this reel — except the drag washers, line guide, and line outlet — are metallic, giving it a very premium feel.

Highlight 6: Smooth casting

I tested it with 1g, 1.5g and 4g lures, all are very smooth casting. But not as smooth as Conquest BFS. This has been tested many times by other users, simialr results.

Internally, ANLAN shows off an impressive level of component integration:

• The one-way clutch inner sleeve and drag plate are fused into one part.
• The clicker gear for the drag sound is cut directly into the main gear.
• The rebound plate and main shaft are integrated as well.
• The gear bridge supports and thumb bar are all CNC-machined as part of the frame.

Thanks to this integration, the entire reel frame is assembled using just 6 screws — impressive!

CNC Machining at Its Finest

• The use of CNC here isn’t just for form — it delivers incredible precision.
• The one-way bearing is press-fit to a near non-removable tolerance.
• The pinion gear is supported by dual bearings (top and bottom).
• Gear module (modulus) is 0.314:
  • For comparison, Shimano Curado BFS is 0.375
  • Haibo Ares Air is 0.373
  • The smaller the module, the finer the gear teeth, and the higher the machining accuracy required.

Gear Module Tip: Module (m) = pitch circle diameter / number of teeth. The smaller the module, the smaller and more precise the gear.

Any Downsides?

No reel is perfect, and the ANLAN has a few quirks:

• The aluminum one-way clutch sleeve may lack the strength of stainless steel under high stress.
• Some users report visible spool wobble a little, likely due to alignment tolerances (may be isolated cases).
• One user told me he don't like the protruding screw(shown in picture below). I personally don't think it's a fault
• The brake dial indicators aren't very intuitive — may take a little getting used to.
• While both side textures are nicely done, their design styles clash slightly, affecting visual unity.

A Word on CNC Philosophy

ANLAN's heavy CNC usage shows clear advantages in precision and design innovation, but is 99.9% CNC machining necessary?

• Traditional dual-bearing reel manufacturing is mature and well-balanced between cost and performance.
• Excessive CNC may slow development and limit accessibility.
• After all, a reel brand grows by offering great products to more anglers, not just elite gearheads.

That said, if you're a reel modder, Roundgeek, or CNC enthusiast, this reel is bound to impress.

We had a brief talk with ANLAN product director.
ANLAN is not shutting down; it's facing significant challenges with financing and new product development, but it continues to make slow progress through considerable effort.
The fine pitch gear has never been used in any CDM reels. This is the fundamental reason why no CDM reel is as smooth as the top JDM products, especially after extensive use, when the performance of CDM reels tends to degrade more quickly, and some with the noise of gear.
If successful, ANLAN will be the first CDM reel to incorporate fine pitch gear. Additionally, ANLAN has many other unique features that other reels, including JDM reels, do not possess, say, smaller size, almost 100% metal parts....
This would be an unprecedented and excting product. We will take part in the design and developing, as well as testing...

Notice to Users:
The ANLAN reel project has been paused (and possibly canceled). The company’s boss and product director have canceled the product launch event three times without providing any explanation.
The main issue seems to be that ANLAN set its ambitions too high. Throughout the reel’s development, numerous problems kept arising, draining both time and financial resources.
ANLAN aimed to create a reel made almost entirely of metal parts, which, as far as we know, has not been achieved by Shimano, Daiwa, or any other company.

In contrast, the DK100 reel, with its realistic and practical design goals, has made substantial progress over the past few months. The development is steadily advancing toward a high-end reel. DK100 even invested in a specialized machine from Japan to produce ultra-precise bearings.

If you were following the ANLAN project, we recommend checking out the DK100 reel. The DK100 is to be an exceptional reel!

High end JDM reel, such as Conquest, uses the High Pitch Gear Teech System.

ANLAN is a metal fishing reel, uniquely designed with all parts and components originally crafted in-house, rather than using pre-existing market components. The aim was to fundamentally enhance the reel's design and functionality. DANKUNG is proud to have been involved throughout the entire development process. The first version was launched in July 2023, and following extensive testing, a list of potential improvements was compiled. After a year of development and refinement, the second version was internally released in July 2024. According to our tests, the smoothness of this second version nearly matches that of the HAIBO ARISE AIR. Unsatisfied with settling, ANLAN Company decided to continue optimizing the reel (from the parts production mainly) instead of releasing it to the public.

ANLAN Full Metal BFS Versatile Reel
This versatile, lightweight BFS reel is initially available in a left-handed version with a 8.1 gear ratio and approximately 140 grams.
Lure weight is 1 - 10 grams.
It features all-metal construction with CNC precision-machined parts, except for the brake pads.
